Tuesday, November 16, 2010 an Iowan named Sal Giunta, a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army, will become the first living soldier to earn the Congressional Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War.
In October of 2007 his unit came under an ambush attack in Afghanistan. While under heavy gun fire he dragged a wounded soldier back to safety. Then, noticing a comrade being dragged away by the enemy, he rushed into the open, firing his rifle all the way. He saved the soldier from being captured.
Below are three videos describing his ordeal. The last video contains strong Army language, and should be avoided for those with tender ears.
The first video is from the TV program 60 Minutes, with Lara Logan reporting.
The second video is a follow-up interview available on the 60 Minutes website. This is a supplement to the Lara Logan report.
WARNING…
STRONG ARMY LANGUAGE – not for all listeners.
The following video is from National Geographic.

No matter what one thinks of war, it is nice to know our nation has soldiers with the character of Sal Giunta. We owe him and his fellow soldiers a deep debt of gratitude.

This guy seems like a class act. Thanks for the videos.
What an example and an inspiration! It is hard to imagine what Giunta and others experience every day to serve our nation and safeguard our freedoms. Terrorists would do their best to destroy all that we are if not opposed by such brave and committed soldiers.
I wonder if in private our modern soldiers wholeheartedly agree with Sherman's famous observation from another era: "I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation. War is hell." (William Tecumseh Sherman)
