An Institute Lesson
My oldest son who is in the Army also teaches LDS Institute. He recently designed a lesson that I thought ought to be posted.
Note: I do NOT give his full name for military security purposes. Therefore, I will call him SON#1.
Subject: The New Testament Jesus is the Book of Mormon Jesus
Name: Son#1 Faux
Principle:
How is the Book of Mormon another testament that Jesus is the Messiah?
Description:
An activity that allows students to practice scripture searching skills, and increase their testimony of Jesus Christ.
Objective: Allow students to see clearly that the Messiah prophesied in the Old Testament is the same Messiah prophesied in the Book of Mormon, and that Jesus is the Christ fulfilling these prophecies. The goal is to create a better understanding of how the Book of Mormon is truly another testament that Jesus is the Christ.
Step 1: Give students a prophecy concerning the coming Messiah in the Old Testament.
Example: Deut 18:15,18-19 ("The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken")
Step 2: Ask students to search the Book of Mormon for the same prophecy, or something similar.
Example: 1 Nephi 22:20-21 ("A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you, like unto me")
Step 3: Ask students to search the scriptures for the fulfillment of the prophecy.
Example: 3 Nephi 20:23 ("I am he of whom Moses spake")
Variation: This same activity can be done by first starting with a Book of Mormon prophecy, then searching for a similar Old Testament prophecy, and then finding further fulfillment of that prophecy in either the Book of Mormon or the New Testament. Here are some examples by step:
Step 1: 2 Nephi 17:14-16 ("a virgin shall conceive, and shall bear a son," and he shall"refuse the evil")
Step 2: Isaiah 7:14-16: ("a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son," and he shall "refuse the evil")
Step 3: Luke 1:26-28 (born of a virgin) & 2 Corinthians 5:21 / Hebrews 4:15 (refuses evil)
Feedback: I have done this exact activity with my Institute students, and they loved it. We discussed scripture searching techniques that helped, and the students felt they better understood how the Book of Mormon was another testament that Jesus is the Messiah.
